The Story:

The Fold Stool is inspired by the centuries old technique of water hardening leather and it combines this ancient production technique with modern forms. The origami-like form of the Fold Stool's square, leather seat, creates both structure and joinery through a complex sequence of folds.

The technique of Cuir Bouilli, or water hardening leather, was once used to create armor in the middle ages.

Leather - Delightful Variation & Texture

The leather seats for the stools are created with beautifully grained vegetable tanned leather. The dark grey/black color is achieved through a process that reacts with tannin deposits which naturally occur during the tanning process, darkening the leather and highlighting subtle variations in tone that emerge and are completely unique to each piece.

Limited Edition Dyed Wood Legs

Richly toned cylindrical legs compliment the folded forms of the seat. The deep indigo blue of the 2016 & 2017 legs, is created by submerging the wood in a natural dye bath until the color soaks deeply into the wood. The leg is then shaped into its final cylindrical form, the fully integrated color reveals the beautiful grain structure of the wood. Knicks and scratches to the legs only reveal more color, creating a durable and resilient color designed to stand the test of time.

Due to the extensive time needed to create these dyed legs, there are only a few made each year and quantities are very limited.
